youth stand up

Wha we do
"Working with The Africa ithemba network and youth mentorship program has been such a fun adventure," said Glodie, who is the group's mentor.

A monthly group activity with The Africa Ithemba Network gives mentors and young people the chance to learn and have fun together.

The activities that the groups took part in included making simple meals, playing soccer and kickball, receiving mentoring, planting trees with Keep Cape Town Beautiful, ziplining and rock climbing at Zip City, and learning about the hospitality industry.

In 2022, youth took part in events such as learning about hospitality, food, and beverage.

In 2022, three young people were among the 54 who participated in activities such as food preparation and baking training.

Young refugees are held in high regard in their communities. Children usually adapt to their new country’s language and culture faster than their parents. Nonetheless, these are youngsters who will need help and direction to navigate through puberty.

Our Youth Mentor program matches young refugees with an experienced role model who can help them navigate South African culture, learn life skills, and help them achieve their long-term goals. “Mentors play a vital role in the lives of our refugee teens,” one of our organizers noted. “They serve as a guide to life in Cape Town, whether it’s helping their teenager with homework, showing them a large park for football, or educating them about South African culture.”
