ENGLISH SCHOOL
OUR OBJECTIVE
To assist refugees, asylum seekers, and South Africans in improving their English, reading, and writing skills in order to better integrate into society.
We provide a course called Language, Orientation and Preparation (LOR) that teaches both practical English skills and the abilities required to assist customers in adjusting to life in South Africa. Among these abilities include the ability to complete employment applications, write checks, fill out prescriptions, report an issue to the police, and attend job interviews.
Clients are more likely to maintain employment and achieve self-sufficiency earlier if they learn the fundamentals of English. The program also encourages participants to socialize and engage with peers and the community. LOR lessons are held at The Africa Ithemba Network headquarters four mornings a week and are led by employees and volunteers. To ensure that everyone studies at the proper level, students are placed into groups based on their level of English ability.
All customers also go through a two-day life orientation training where they learn the fundamentals of living in South Africa in addition to the LOR courses. Transport, community services, finances, South African legislation, adjusting to a new culture, education, employment, health, housing, and security are some of the topics covered.
Put an emphasis on creating capacity and use the abilities and skills of migrants, refugees, and South Africans to assist others and themselves. The Africa Ithemba network has chosen a group of skilled individuals and grown to arrange community English classes for the needs of our students and become deserving active agents with the help of our volunteers from everywhere. in the neighborhood
Our learning system
Not being able to speak English or other South African languages simply increases the vulnerability and difficulty of trying to survive as a refugee in South Africa. The English course is excellent for enhancing everyday communication abilities, and most students prefer to learn in a classroom setting. Rapid improvement is ensured by small class sizes and well-trained teachers.
Students learn the fundamentals of the language in the English course, including English grammar and pronunciation as well as the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Put an emphasis on creating capacity and utilizing the abilities and skills of migrants and refugees to aid both them and others. Our volunteer, the Africa Ithemba Network, and together
A group of persons with teaching experience was chosen, and they were encouraged to offer community English classes for their community and act as active agents of change through education.
To supplement our classes, we use materials from New Headway English. The curriculum places a lot of attention on grammar and is properly balanced. It is the most popular adult English course in the entire world. The listening, word and syllable stress, and intonation are highlighted on the class audio CD. By being exposed to many accents, it gives the student a chance to develop their listening abilities.
